Happy Mother’s Day to all you amazing moms! I hope you will enjoy the gift your children created this week. Enjoy this special day! This week we are finished our study of the sacraments and will begin learning about the Rosary. In math we learned about standard and nonstandard units of measurement. In science we finished grasslands and will study deserts as our last habitat. We had so much fun singing at the Spring Concert and participating at the Jump-A-Thon; it was a full week!

As the year winds down, I encourage you to check in with your child to ensure he/she is able to work independently. Can he/she tie shoes? Work alone for 15 minutes? We are working hard to be sure we are ready for second grade.

 Field Trip

Tuesday, May 29th first grade is headed to the Woodland Park Zoo. We will eat lunch there. Please send a disposable sack lunch with your child. Please also pack a separate snack for your child to eat when we return to school. Students need to wear a uniform top with the St. John logo (red shirt or navy sweatshirt) and good walking shoes. Please drop off booster seats (if your child requires one) to the hallway outside of XDC in the morning. Signs for “Feeney” and “Peoples” will be posted. Make sure your booster is labeled with your name! . I still need permission slips and money from many parents. Please return both ASAP! If you need another form please let me know. I still need volunteers for the field trip. Please email me if you are available! Chaperone Driver Forms will be sent out mid next week. Thank you!

Habitat Projects and Habitat Day

Homework for this next week is for your child to build/create the 3D model of his/her habitat. It would be great if your child could include the animal as well (a photograph can work). It is important that the first graders take ownership of their creations. A few parents have asked about posters. Your child does not need to glue his/her report on a poster board. He/She will be sharing about his/her animal and habitat on Habitat Day so it’s easier if it is stapled together so your child can read it (if they get nervous!).

On Wednesday, May 23rd, students will meet in Egan Hall first thing in the morning. Please bring your 3D model and report to Egan Hall. Mrs. Peoples and I will be there at 8:05 to help students get set up. Students who are coming from XDC will be escorted to Egan Hall. Parents are invited to tour habitat projects at the end of the day from 2:30 – 3:00. If you are unable to make it at the end of the day, we will be showing our habitats to visiting classes from 10:00 – 11:00, 1:15-1:45, and 2:00 – 3:00.

Summer Conference Sign Ups: This time of year I like to offer optional conferences as a way for you to check in on progress, second grade readiness, and ideas to help your child over the summer. Each first grader will make a summer contract to be shared at the conference. This contract will include a plan for reading, writing, math, and student choice. If you do not sign up for a conference, I will send home this contract with ideas for things you can work on over the summer.
