First Grade Dolphin News

Happy New Year and Happy Epiphany! I hope you all had a blessed Christmas and some peaceful family time together. Your children have enjoyed sharing vacation stories with their classmates and me.  This week the first graders identified The Holy Family and learned about Epiphany. In math, students are learning subtraction strategies to 10.

In first grade beginning in January students will be taught using the mind+heart social and emotional learning curriculum. It helps students to develop emotional literacy, self-control, and social competence. The ultimate goal is for primary aged children to develop a healthy sense of self and positive peer relations, that will continue throughout their lives. Children will learn to express their emotions appropriately, solve problems, develop a “growth mindset”, build relationships, and be thoughtful citizens who take responsibility and show respect.  This week the first graders learned that their brains control their emotions and began a feelings journal after reading “The Color Monster.”

This month the fruit of the Holy Spirit is Self-Control. They learned that self-control means we can control our thoughts, words, and actions.  The Saints that show us this fruit are St. Elizabeth Ann Seton (started Catholic schools in America!) and St. John Bosco (had magic shows to entertain orphans and then taught them about God).

During the last week of January, we celebrate Catholic Schools Week. Please join us for 10:30 Mass on Sunday, January 26th.   Following the service, teachers will be in their classrooms for an all school Open House. I hope you will be able to join us. During that week I would like to invite several parents to come talk about vocations with the class. If you are interested in visiting the class to share a little about what you do, please let me know.
