First Grade Dolphin News
Happy first week of February! The first graders began learning about the Beatitudes by making a book of flowers to help them remember. For example, the mourning glory flower blooms and dies in a day to help them remember “Blessed are those who mourn, they shall be comforted.” Our Fruit of the Holy Spirit for the month of February is Love/Charity. They talked about how they can be loving this month. We had a great discussion where they shared that they can pray, be kind, make sacrifices, share, care, and be a good friend, In math, students continued to learn different strategies to subtract like counting back, using a number line (they made their own), and using doubles. In science, they experimented with sound vibrations by making “guitars” with cups and rubber bands. They watched how loud sounds made the glitter jump from the bowl wrapped in plastic. Next the first graders will experiment how light helps us see in the dark.
100th Day of School:
Please bring your 100-word poster and 100 word grd project to school on the 19th.
Valentine’s Day: Valentine’s Day is coming up soon! Signing a name 20 plus times can be a big job for children. You may want to start early so that the activity is fun and not dreaded. I encourage your children not to bring candy on this day if possible because of the multiple allergies in our class. We will have a popcorn party on February 13 at 2:15. Please let me know if you can bring Skinny Pop bags of popcorn for this day. Thank you!
Lost and Found
We are working with the first and second grade students to take care of the hallway. If a teacher finds a coat, backpack, or lunch bag on floor, it goes into the tub by my door. The first time they can get it back for free. The second offense they can get it back but they need to wash the kindergarten tables for one day at lunch. If your child is missing a coat, I have a lot in the tub. Please come and check it out.
Did you Know…
Kids at this age love to color, paint, read, and write; experience an artistic explosion; learn the most when teacher value their efforts and encourage risk-taking
