This week we dove into exploring the Ocean Habitat. We discussed the layers of the ocean and saw videos of dolphins surfing, the biggest fish in the world, and newly discovered animals in the Atlantic Ocean! We wrapped up a math focus on data and graphing and next week we will begin a unit on three-dimensional shapes! We also enjoyed watching some amazing jump ropers at our Jump Rope For Heart assembly. To learn more about the program see the information packet sent home in folders on Thursday.
A huge THANK YOU to Mr. Turner, Cullen’s dad, for presenting amazing pictures and information about his work in Antarctica to the whole first grade!
The first graders learned about the “Secret to Happiness” with the 8 Beatitudes. They made a book of flowers that go with each one. Check out their books!
Spelling Test Change
Starting last week I added a spelling sentence to the spelling test. Each week the first grade teachers will give 10 words and a sentence. The sentence is worth 5 points. One point for a capital letter, one point for punctuation, and three points for words spelled correctly. This will help with the grade “applies spelling words in writing”. Also it will help reinforce using correct punctuation and capitalization.
Today information was sent in your homework packet regarding Habitat Day. Please take a moment to read the pink “To Do List” all the way through. The green habitat-planning sheet will be sent home with a note if it was approved/not approved. For example if our child chooses a dolphin, this would not be approved because there are many types of dolphins. If you child chooses a spinner dolphin it will be approved. Please do not begin research or building your habitat until you get approval from your teacher. On May 23rd, parents are invited to tour habitat projects at the end of the day from 2:30 – 3:00. A detailed schedule of the day will be posted with other available visiting times.
Poem in Your Pocket Day: It is National Poetry Month and there is a great Nation Wide Event called Poem in your Pocket Day that we would like to participate in. On April 25th, we will all select a poem, carry it with us, and share it with others. It will be so fun if everybody on campus participates and shares poems throughout the day with the kids and the kids can share with one another.
Thank You for Care Bags: The care bags were delivered this week to those in need and because there were so many given, the residents were able to cover Ballard and give to people downtown too. See the website for pictures of the distribution!
