April 19, 2019-Good Friday

First Grade Dolphin News

We thoroughly enjoyed our first week in the new classroom.  We spent a lot of time learning new routines and procedures as well as wrapping up our study of the Desert Habitat!

Holy Week is a time of learning and reflection at St. John. Today we honored Jesus’ sacrifice on Good Friday through silent dismissal. Students made Holy Week books, studied each of Jesus’ last days on Earth, and prayed with the school community the Stations of the Cross.  I sent home their Lent Journals, Stations of the Cross books, and Holy Week books in their folders today.  Please use these wonderful resources to celebrate Holy Week!

We sadly said our goodbyes to Charlie McCarthy and his family.  They are heading off to England next week.  We will keep this amazing family in our prayers.

THANK YOU-Lenten Service Projects:  Thank you for your generous donations of items for the Teddy Bear Patrol, Sock Drive, Book Drive, and Rice Bowl contributions.  It was a joy to watch the students come together to give and bless others.  If you check out Warm 106.9’s Facebook page or St. John Catholic School’s Facebook page, you will see a thank you video for the Teddy Bear Patrol.  She was amazed how polite our students were at the Teddy Bear Patrol assembly!

Spirit Gear:

We are now offering spirit gear for our families!  The on-line store will be open until April 22.  After that time, it will take two weeks for the gear to arrive.  The spirit gear does NOT take the place of our school uniform.  Show your school spirit and order today!!

Special Notes:

First Grade Dolphin News

It has been a hectic week of packing up and moving our classroom but the first graders have done an amazing job of being flexible during this busy time!  The first graders finished their unit on Data and Graphing.  Then they began studying measurement by comparing the length of objects found in the classroom.  The students began their unit on desert habitats by exploring the types of plants and animals that live there and where deserts around the world are found.

Thank you for all your donations to the Teddy Bear Patrol.  A DJ from 106.9 came today and talked to the primary grades about how important it is to share kindness and love with those in need.  Weldon the Bear was very happy to see all our stuffed animals!

Next week we will celebrate the holiest week of the Church year!  We want your family to experience this week so the homework will be focused on Religion.  You can keep the purple Holy Week packet at home over Easter break to read through (there is something for Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday). Remember that at Good Friday dismissal we leave in silence to remember how much Jesus loves us.

New Classroom and Afternoon Pick Up Procedure:

We will be in our new classroom beginning Monday! Please pick up your child in the afternoon from along the fence near the Quigley Building.  Morning time procedure will stay the same.

First Grade Dolphin News

The first grader had an awesome week in science learning about Rain Forest Habitats.  They wrapped up by comparing Temperate and Rainforests using a grid, labeling the parts of a spider monkey, and creating toucans for art!  Next week we shift our Habitat focus to Deserts.  Students continued their data and graphing unit in math.  We made picture graphs, bar graphs, and tally charts.

The St. John School auction is tonight!  Thank you so much for supporting St. John School.  Let the bidding begin!

Mrs. Jessup’s 1st Grade

Item 906

“Birds taking Flight”

Close-knit, social, colorful and fun-loving birds perch upon hand-painted branches.  Each child painted a unique little birdy, three of which are taking flight.  This piece illustrates a beautiful truth in parenting: “We give our children roots & wings”.  A picture of the work is on the back with the name of the artist of each bird.

Value:  Roots and Wings
