First Grade Dolphin News

It was a great week in first grade! We started spelling groups this week and settled in to the format of our spelling instruction. In Religion, we learned about how to be a follower of Jesus and that ALL THINGS are possible with God.  We finished our dolphin unit this week.  Students painted amazing dolphins and wrote interesting facts.  They are now officially Dolphin Experts! Today was our first spelling test and students gave their best effort!  All tests will be sent home the following Friday in your child’s folder.

Reminders for every day:

Please send a water bottle with your child every day!

Please send in your child’s daily folder every day!

Please send in a snack for your child every day!

Be an angel!

On October 2, we will celebrate our guardian angels.  Be an angel and bring food for those in need.  Our St. Vincent de Paul food bank is empty!  We need angels to bring items such as cereal, pasta, crackers, and tuna to school.  Please bring something on Tuesday.  Thank you!

September 21, 2018

It was a busy week in first grade! Students used scales to learn what the equals sign means in math equations.   They are reading up to 10 minutes at a time and now working on writing in their notebooks during Daily 5. First graders ran hard at the Jog-A-Thon.  Donations are still very welcome; we are so close to our $80,000 goal.  We can do it Eagles!

During the first week of October all first graders will take the MAP test. A parent letter will be sent home next week with more information.

Homework Note

Remember the second box on the weekly homework packet is always optional. This Monday students will begin spelling groups which are leveled according to beginning of the year assessments. Spelling tests will be on Fridays. Students who have pictures and words will be tested on spelling the ten words only. Students who have only words will be tested on ten words from the list. Thank you for practicing at home! If you have questions about spelling homework please let me know. I am happy to help. Remember homework should not take more than 20 minutes per night (including reading).

First Grade Dolphin News

The first graders are off to a good start!  They finished their first full week of school.  They learned the school rules and the class rules (1. Show Respect 2.  Make good choices 3.  Solve problems).  The students are becoming independent learners during Daily 5 as they build their stamina and read pictures (wordless books) and words.  They worked in their Religion books and were asked “Who is God” through artwork called “Holy Trinity”.  The first graders are practicing the virtue of the month, hope, by asking God each morning “What is your plan for me today?”  They are saints-in-training as they strive to be like St. Joseph.  The students practiced letter formation through Frog Jump Capital letters.  Did you know that no letter starts at the bottom?  The first graders became scientists as they studied the different kinds of dolphins.

The first graders attended Adoration at church on Thursday.  The church is open from 9:00-12:00 every Thursday where parishioners and students can pray before the blessed sacrament (Jesus!).  We will do this every week. It is amazing to see their reverence in church.

Run happy! Please continue to send pledges and donations in through September. Thank you for all of your donations, pledges, and school spirit.   We are over half way to our school goal of $80,000!!!  Miss Murray’s class is in the lead for primary.  We can do it!  Go First Grade!

Thank you to all the parents who attended Curriculum Night on Thursday.  Please look over the file of information you received and email me with any questions.

If you didn’t get a chance at Curriculum Night, please write a note of encouragement for your child and send it in to class.  I will keep them in their files and when they feel sad or want to give up, I will present them with your note!  Thank you!
