What a great week in first grade! The first graders continued to learn about the beatitudes through flowers. For example “Blessed are they who mourn: for they shall be comforted” we can think about the Mourning Glory flower that blooms and then dies the same day. Then new flowers bloom the next morning bringing renewed beauty. God promises that he will comfort us when we are sad. He renews us daily.
The students have finished the pond habitat and now have begun learning about polar habitats. They will learn the difference between the North Pole and the South Pole. This will prepare them for their field trip to the Science Center to explore Polar exhibits!
Lent is right around the corner and the first graders are getting their hearts ready for Jesus. This week they made their own prayers to Jesus and wrote down actions they can do during Lent. For example they wrote, “be prayerful, read the Bible, be quiet, friendly, kind, and giving”.
Lent Rice Bowl: Lent starts March 1. I have placed the rice bowls in your child’s folder today. This Lent, our school is participating in CRS Rice Bowl, a faith-in-action program that helps families experience Lenten spirituality by living in solidarity with people in need around the world. One way to bring Lent to life in your home is to place your CRS Rice Bowl in a prominent place in your home and use it to collect your Lenten sacrifices. (For first graders, this may look like doing acts of kindness at home to earn collections for others in your Rice Bowl.) We will be collecting Rice Bowls at the end of Lent.
Field Trip Note: Please pack a sack lunch in a disposable bag for the field trip. Please also send a disposable drink rather than a water bottle, as the chaperones will be in charge of carrying all the lunches. We will return to school around 1:30 to have snack. Please make sure to send a snack packed separate from the lunch for when we return. I will send out additional information for the volunteers next week! If you haven’t already turned in your field trip permission slips, I need them by Monday, February 27!
