It was a great week in first grade! Students used adjectives to describe pumpkins, and then painted their own. In science, first graders continued to learn about earth’s place in the universe by studying stars and the moon. They painted suns and made star constellations. The first graders learned the prayers of the rosary and made their own decade rosary with beads and pipe cleaners. Now they can pray anywhere! On Thursday, students participated in the Great Washington Shake out, a statewide earthquake drill. The drill was followed up with a disaster drill to assess our emergency preparedness. Everything went smoothly and the students were fantastic! For more information about the Great Washington Shake Out, please visit Shake Out Link.

Book Bags

This weekend your son or daughter will bring home a book bag. Each book bag should contain one book to read over the weekend. Remember to only read what the assignment says in your yellow folder. (Some book bags will contain an additional folder with work from Mrs. McCarthy.) Please return book bags Monday with the books enclosed. Students who have practice pages in their folders from Mrs. McCarthy should keep the printouts at home and return the empty folders with the book bags on Monday.

Congratulations! We exceeded our jog-a-thon goal. Thank you for all of your hard work and support for St. John School. This week the students learned about prayers of the rosary (Apostles Creed, Our Father). They harvested potatoes, learned about earth’s place in the universe, observed the position of the sun, used adjectives to describe Sheila Rae and themselves, and continued to learn addition strategies. They made giant number lines with sticky notes (coming home soon!).

A special thank you to Mrs. Aguila for helping with the garden and making our potatoes for our potato party so students could taste their harvest.

First graders continued to study nouns and verbs and wrote their own class version of Memoirs of a Goldfish.
